Be Broken

Broken doesn’t mean you’re not going through the motion. Doesn’t mean you’re not functioning. The world is full of broken people... to the point that I question whether or not wholeness is something that exists or not. What does it mean to be fixed? White washed... crystal clear. Transparent. I don’t think any of us know. In fact, who would want to be something so... shallow. Straightforward. Cleaned up. Give me some drama. I could use a little bit more of your angst. I want to feel through you the way I feel through me...

We are all broken- it’s just

1. a matter of whether or not we choose to acknowledge our brokenness, and

2. whether or not we choose our brokenness to define our lives ... or how we choose our brokenness to define our lives.

Our brokenness does not preclude us from living a happy, productive life. In fact, our brokenness can be EXACTLY what motivates us to live such a life. The desire to fill in the holes... those in between gaps... that’s a powerful force we can harness.

At the same time, it’s a dangerous path to be too consumed by what is missing, rather than what we have. Because, at the end of the day, there’s no guarantee that we can be fixed. In fact, I’d venture as far as to say that many times we cannot be fixed. Being “fixed” is a myth. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be motivated. How, you ask? It’s a simple answer, really. Allow yourself to be broken.

Own your holes. Understand that your holes, all your complexities as a person, are what make you, you. Offer you a unique, valuable perspective on the world around you. A means to connect with other people.

No one can identify with perfection. We identify with flaws, and you have plenty of them. Wear your heart on your sleeve, and people will listen. Offer access to your feelings, and people will latch on. You’ll forge powerful connections with those around you. Maybe make a friend or two. Ideally, feel less alone in a world that might make you feel otherwise.

Work towards tomorrow, but appreciate where you are today.

Be broken. Be human. Be vulnerable. Be you.
