Are You Unique? Or Do You Just Want To Be?

“You are not special. You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We're all part of the same compost heap." ― Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club

Question for you: How unique do you consider yourself compared to the rest of the population?

I consider myself to be very unique for reasons I could go on and on for that I don’t feel like digging into at the moment.... And I suspect that if I posed this question to everyone I bumped into, I’d find very few who would consider themselves ordinary.... which would mean some of us are definitely wrong in our self-assessments.

It’s funny... though... because I feel many of us might outwardly express the desire to be ordinary.... yet few of us would be willing to acknowledge the parts of us that are in fact ordinary. (In this context, I am defining ordinary as average compared to the rest of the population in a given community, and I am thinking more in terms of personality/interests/connections to others more than anything else). Being different has almost been glamorized to the point where it is the cultural norm.... There’s this emerging sentiment that each of us should aspire to be beautiful, unique snowflakes. Which is amazing. But are we always as unique compared to those around as we’d like to imagine?

As I’ve grown up, I’ve thought less about what is ordinary and what is not. Or at least, I’ve found myself caring about it less. Though I feel I’m always testing my limits, I only have the capacity to think about so much during any given day... and wondering whether or not I am ordinary or unique compared to the rest of the population really isn’t achieving anything. It’s also something I personally don’t have much control over. So...I’m just going to keep doing my thing, and you go ahead and do yours. Different or not, we’re in this life together. I am interested in your story. And I hope you’re interested in mine. There’s a whole lot we have to learn from each other.
